An Interview with Indian Travel Search service 90di’s co-founder Khushnood Naqvi

90di_pageFrom this day, Simple Thoughts is starting up a series of interviews with prominent entrepreneurs from India and all over the world. In our first endeavor, we managed to do a tête-à-tête with Khushnood Naqvi, co-founder of a very useful online travel search service, 90di. (Get more information for 90di). The main USP of 90di is, it combines the train and flight routes to show numerous traveling route possibilities to the user which is unique in its own way and very efficient too. It also gives you some more interesting options to work upon and select the best means of transportation possible (as is claimed). So without further ado, let’s get on with the excerpts.

Mr. Naqvi: 90di – stands for Ninety Degree Internet. It actually stands for vertical search i.e. looking at the Internet vertically. Since we knew we wanted to work on vertical search areas and starting from travel. Calling it 90di, seemed fine.

Mr. Naqvi: It was in 2007, when I had left Infosys, and was taking a sabbatical. I knew that I was going to be working on some Internet product. I started to think up ideas and bounce of with my would-be co-founders Kiran and Abhinit. We all instantly liked the idea of a vertical search for travel and having features like Train+Flight combined routes which no body was giving. So the idea was accepted and we started to work on it in May 2007.

90di-on-twitter

Mr. Naqvi: Are you asking this in the context of Route Rank. Yes, route rank puts a penalty if a transit happens to be say in kolkata from airport to station (in the BLR to KGP case). And if this transit happens in the night there is an added penalty.

Mr. Naqvi: Once we decided on the idea. We did not waste time and all three of us just started to code. We had not even registered the company then (which we eventually did in July 2007). So we just sat in our garage like office and just simply coded for 4 months. We released the site for friends by August end 2007. We got good feedback from them (including Angsuman) but people felt that the UI is very bad. All of us were fairly decent engineers but quite bad at UI. So then we went and hired a professional for a few weeks, and she did the UI screens for us. and by Jan 2008 we had the site looking in fairly decent shape. Since were were self funded and did not have any “money” for marketing. So we relied mostly on “word of mouth” marketing and also some media stories. The Hindu did a story on us, which got a large chunk of users. The environment is all open source – Linux, MySql, Apache and Java.

Mr. Naqvi: Actually traction is quite decent. Its organic growth for us without any kind of money-spending-marketing. So its kind of like a tree growing (i.e. not as fast as we would have liked but off late we have thankfully noticed an acceleration in growth. In the past 3 months traffic has doubled.

Mr. Naqvi: Our vision is to make it the place for searching for travel in India. We see that people start their travel search in generic search engines like Google. But our hope is that we can make people want to search for any travel related information on 90di – whether its hotels, or package tours or a flight/train.

Mr. Naqvi: We don’t intend to charge the end-user. Our model is that we charge the supplier per transaction. For e.g. if a flight or Bus is booked through 90di, we get a referal/commission from the Airline or a Bus.

Mr. Naqvi: Actually, I had been nursing entrepreneurial ambitions for a few years in the job. Also I wanted to work for product and cutting-edge technology things. So I thought I should test out my seriousness by taking the plunge.

Mr. Naqvi: Entrepreneurship is much more challenging than job to say the least. At the job, you just have to bother about just one aspect i.e. getting the software designed, developed and tested properly. Somebody else gives you the requirement for it. And somebody else sells it. In a Start-up you have to do everything. You think up the requirements, which hopefully the end-user likes. You build it. You sell it. You evangelize your stuff. You look for funding. You make biz dev calls with suppliers. And doing all this you need to maintain your enthusiasm and spirit. So basically it has been challenging (really challenging) and also fulfilling. Nothing like a sincere appreciation from a happy user

Taragana: oh that was too modest. Anyway, what do you have to say about the recent spurt of internet centric ventures of the new bunch of entrepreneurs in India? Do you think internet based apps are the future even for a country like India with low internet penetration?

Mr. Naqvi: Not not at all. But can share somethings which we believe in … may be at a later date. Let me answer your question now, I am totally sold on the Internet story myself. recently I was seeing a CNBC program in which Vint Cerf was there, you know ppl refer to him as “father of Internet”. He is presently working at Google. And he said – “I sincerely believe that only 1% of all the possible Internet apps have been developed”. that statement gave me goose bumps. I also believe that Internet apps are still very-very primitive, and there is so much to happen.

Internet broadband should also pick-up in India. people talk about mobiles by passing the internet story. But I think its the other way round. back-end will be the Internet services, accessed over a mobile, a desktop, by your car, any kind of smart gadgets.

Mr. Naqvi: Actually travel is hopefully the first app that we have build for 90di. Really hope that we will build some more useful ones. But we don’t want to rush. We want to do full justice to 90di travel, before we do something else.

THIS IS THAILAND A Guide to Buying and Using Car Travel Insurance

Travel is already expensive enough, isn’t it? The cost of air fare, cruises, hotels, ground transportation, food and activities and entertainment are already high enough. I don’t know about you, but I work hard for my money, and when I travel, I want to keep as much of my money in MY pocket as possible. Is travel insurance a necessity or a luxury? Why not cut a few corners here and there. Why buy something if it’s not really needed?

My personal answer is, of course, that I am not independently wealthy and can’t withstand the potential financial losses I would incur if I require medical care while I’m traveling. Not being independently wealthy also means that I’m in the market for adequate but cheap travel insurance. I suspect that you are in the same position, so you, too need cheap travel insurance. If you’re still not sure about that, consider the following.

Did you know that if you get sick or are injured while traveling abroad, your medical plan may not cover all the expenses you will incur? If the costs of treatment are higher than the maximums of your medical plan, you will be responsible for the difference, unless you have already purchased travel insurance. In fact, you may not even be admitted into hospitals in some countries without proof that you have health or medical insurance. Learn more about travel health insurance by reading Travel Health Care and Car Insurance Plans article.

This is true for everyone, regardless of age or length of time abroad. Suppose you fall ill just a few hours after arriving at your destination. Or suppose you make a day-trip to another country, and you are injured in a traffic accident. Or suppose one of your children is part of a group making a class visit abroad, gets food poisoning and requires hospitalization. In all cases, without adequate travel health insurance, you will be responsible for the costs above and beyond the limitations of your existing medical plan.

Therefore, before going abroad, you need to make sure that you are adequately covered by travel medical insurance that won’t break your budget. You should check to see if appropriate coverage is already available to you through your medical plan, employee benefits, or even through a credit card. If the coverage is sufficient for your needs, then you can enjoy your trip without incurring the extra expense of travel insurance. However, if you are not sure of your coverage, or if your coverage is inadequate or non-existent, then your next step should be to research and purchase the travel insurance coverage you need.

When I bought my first plane ticket to China a few years ago it cost around $2000 round-trip, and my travel insurance cost me over $500 because I didn’t shop around for cheap travel insurance online. A few years later, a little bit older and wiser, and my travel insurance for another trip to China cost me much less–about $300 for roughly the same coverage. The difference? Before buying my travel insurance for the second trip, I shopped around online and got the coverage I needed, at the right price. If I’d have purchased my travel insurance for this latest trip from my travel agent, it would’ve cost me about $600 for the trip, and my plane tickets only cost $1,500! Not exactly the smart way to go.

So how much will it cost you? Not as much money as it will cost you if you get sick or injured abroad and you don’t have any travel insurance coverage! That’s the obvious answer to the question. In fact, how much travel insurance costs will depend on your age and the type of coverage you choose. Basic policies cost as little as $5.50 USD per $1000 of coverage. On the other hand, you can expect a full coverage policy to cost you from 7 to 10% of the cost of your trip, depending on your age. The older you are, the more you will pay. No matter what the cost of the policy, however, it’s sure to be much less than the cost of medical evacuation! The good news is that you can easily, conveniently and quickly research and locate excellent but cheap online travel insurance and reduce the costs while making an informed purchase. This is much better than taking what you are offered at the travel agency because you can choose from hundreds of travel insurance companies and polices and save yourself a lot of money in the process.

1. Consider the worst-case scenario. If you can financially withstand the worst-case scenario then maybe you don’t need travel insurance or maybe you don’t need a comprehensive policy.

2. Make sure the policy you are considering provides adequate medical/dental coverage, including medical evacuation coverage just in case you need medical care in a place where the best treatment available is below the standards you are accustomed to in your country. This can happen if you fall ill in a developing country or even on a cruise ship.

4. If you are a frequent traveler, you should consider annual or year-round travel insurance policies. Sometimes they are called multi-trip travel insurance policies. Whatever the name, these policies can be relatively cheap when compared to single-trip travel insurance policies.

5. Know what you are buying, so read the fine print. Make sure that you understand what the company considers to be a legitimate reason for cancellation or interruption. If the list is too restrictive, maybe you should consider another policy.

6. Don’t restrict yourself to buying only from your travel agent. He/She will probably only have one company’s product(s) available, and it’s there for your convenience, but that convenience can be quite costly!

7. Ask lots of questions about the coverage. Play the “what if” game. Ask for clear explanations of terminology. Make sure that you and the travel insurance company are speaking the same language.

Remember that your travel insurance policy covers you between certain specific dates, so don’t start your trip early or extend your trip without first changing the dates of coverage on your travel insurance policy. Of course, this might cost you extra, but that’s cheaper than finding yourself without coverage when you need it the most. Also, it almost goes without saying that you should bring your travel insurance policy with you when you go abroad. You can’t consult the policy if it’s sitting on your desk at home. You should also carry your travel insurance company’s toll-free assistance phone number and other contact information with you wherever you go. It does you no good if you get ill or hurt and the necessary policy information is sitting in your hotel room. It’s also a good idea to bring your regular medical coverage cards and info with you.

I hope these tips will help you by the best travel insurance for you. Then take your trip with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you are insured by the right travel insurance policy at the right price. Bon voyage!

The Yungang Caves | Travel Guide East Asia China

The Yungang Caves are located about sixteen kilometres west of Datong in Shanxi Province and consists of a sequence of 53 caves. The caves home to over 51, 000 deseed sculptures that were determined during the Northern Wei Dynasty (460 -494 AD). The grottoes reach one kilometre from east to west and can be classified into three chief categories.

The first group consisting of Caves 1, 2, 3 and 4 are at the eastern end separate from others. Cave 1 and Cave 2 have suffered from the rigors of time and being exposed to the rudiments. Cave 3, is an addition added after the Northern Wei Dynasty and is the chief grotto among Yungang caves.

In Cave 6, duration in the centre of chamber is a 15-gauge-high two-untruth pagoda stake. Carvings in the pagoda ramparts and the sides of the cave illustrate the life of the Buddha from his birth to his attainment of paradise.

In Yungang Cave 8 is a very atypical head of Shiva seen with eight arms and four heads and riding on a bull. Cave 9 and Cave 10 are notable for it’s front pillars and numbers bearing musical instruments.Musicians singing instruments also appear in Cave 12.Cave 11 has an adjust pagoda leader in its centre triumph to the roof. On its four sides are imprinted images of Buddha.

Caves numbering 16 to Cave 20 are the oldest in the complexes and each one symbolizes a ruler from the Northern Wei Dynasty and is were the business of “Emperor is the Buddha” is alive. The caves from No. 21 forward are built in the later times and cannot contrast to their better-preserved counterparts.

Facial Videos | Guide To A Great Vacation

We have reviews of some movies listed below. Here are some ways to find movie download sites. You can find good results with by searching “Download Movies Online”, “Top Movie Downloads” and “Download DVDs”.

The Singing: Nun: Sappy comicbook stuff based on an actual Belgian nun whose dedication is split between religious work and making hit records. Cast includes Debbie Reynolds, Ricardo Montalban, Greer Garson, Agnes Moorehead, Chad Everett, Katharine Ross, Ed Sullivan, Juanita Moore, and Tom Drake.  (98 minutes, 1966)

La Prisonuiere: From the head of Diabolique comes this ambiguous, bewildered study of afemale addicted to a photographer of sadomasochism. This film is truly a remarkably piece of art. Cast includes Laurent Terzieff, Bernard Fresson, Elsabeth Wiener, Dany Carrel, Dario Moreno, and Daniel Riviere.  (104 minutes, 1959)

Prophecy:  Classical musician and her physician spouse quarrel over what appears to be gigantic salami in upstate Maine after mercury infecting turns animals into large mutants and worse. Ludicrous terror film is excellent for a few chuckles. Cast includes Talia Shire, Robert Foxworth, Armand Assante, Richard Dysart, and Victoria Racimo.  (95 minutes, 1979)

Double Wedding: Loy’s orchestration of her sis’s marriage ceremony is upset by the presence of free spirited bohemian Powell. The megastars are the entire show in this alternatively disheartening adaptation of Ferenc Molnar’s play Incredible Love. Cast includes William Powell, Myrna Loy, Florence Rice, John Beal, Jessie Ralph, Edgar Kennedy, Sidney Toler, and Mary Gordon. (87 minutes, 1937)

The Search for Signs of Inteligent Life in the Universe: This is a witty re-creation of Lily Tomlin’s 1985 one female Broadway show. Her characterizations run the gamut from box woman to juvinille delinquent to New Age Lady, with much of the material in a feminist vein. The show stars Lily Tomlin obviously. (120 minutes, 1991)

Slave Girl: Story of adventure with a sinister man keeping Americans captive. This film should not to be taken seriously (there’s even a speaking camel). Cast includes Yvonne De Carlo, George Brent, Broderick Crawford, Albert Dekker, Lois Collier, Andy Devine, and Arthur Treacher. (80 minutes, 1947)

The Hi-Lo Country: Tale of 2 men in post-WW2 New Mexico who fall in love with the identical lady and she’s already married to someone else. A tribute to the dude way of life and the delights of real kinship, this film has so much going for it (containing Harrelson’s wonderful behavior as a hell-raiser and Oliver Stapleton’s cinematography) that it’s a pity it doesn’t hit the bull’s-eye and Arquette is so boring. Cast includes Woody Harrelson, Billy Crudup, Patricia Arquette, Sam Elliott, Cole Hauser, Penelope Cruz, Darren Caves, Jacob Vargas, James Gammon, Lane Smith, and Katy Jurado. (114 minutes, 1998)

The Red Violin: Multi-episode film follows the destiny of a hexed violin from 17th-century Italy to 18th century Vienna, 19th century England, 20th-century China and present day Montreal. The tales are mainly downbeat and or aggravating, and the finish up part with appraiser Jackson is difficult to swallow. Colorful locales and enthralling premises sustain limited interest all the way through. Cast includes Carlo Cecchi, Irene Grazioli, Jean-Luc Bideau, Jason Flemyng, Greta Scacchi, Sylvia Chang, Samuel L. Jackson, Colm Feore, Monique Mercure, Don McKellar, and Sandra Oh.  (131 minutes, 1998)

Doughboys:  This is one of Buster’s poorest films, a tiresome Army comedy. Rude sergeant Brophy overrides the few laughs. Cast includes Buster Keaton, Sally Eilers, Cliff Edwards, and Edward Brophy. (79 minutes, 1930)

These movies and thousands of others can be downloaded from the internet. As we said before, search with “Buy Movie Downlaods”, or “Buy And Download Movies Online” to find good information on downloading. An additional search with “Internet DVD Rental” might bring good results.

DIY Travel: Enterprising travelers are their own travel agents | ehotelier.com News Archives

For Asia Pacific travelers, overseas trips begin with a visit to the internet to plan their own itinerary, according to the Travel Smart Survey commissioned by Visa. Seventytwo percent of survey respondents seek travel tips to help them decide where to go mainly from the internet (43 percent), travel agents (23 percent) or friends, relatives and colleagues (23 percent).

The way the sexes and generations use the internet for travel planning differs. Women are more likely to be their own travel agents than men with 48 percent of the women surveyed saying they use the internet for travel tips, compared with 39 percent of men. In addition, more than half of younger travelers between 18 and 29 years old ( 54 percent) are likely to get information online compared with 33 percent of those aged 40 and above.

Brian McGrory, Regional Head, Debit Products, Visa, said: Travelers in Asia Pacific are becoming increasingly resourceful and are seeking information about their destinations before they arrive. In fact, we've found they spend an average of 14 weeks to plan their trip.

Travelers are also making their own travel arrangements, from booking airlines tickets to accommodation, using payment cards as their primary method of payment. The internet really is a onestop shop for travelers to plan ahead and websites such as Visa Great Breaks allow travelers to choose from a wide range of attractive offers to suit their needs and budgets.

Respondents from Malaysia (29 percent) are the least likely in the region to consult the internet, and almost half (44 percent) do not look for any information for their trip, followed by those from Hong Kong (35 percent consult the internet; 39 percent do not look for information at all) and Taiwan (36 percent respectively).

The internet is a useful resource for respondents from India (21 percent) and China (20 percent) when checking on available payment methods for purchases at their destination, while respondents from Japan (53 percent) and Korea (35 percent) prefer to check with their friends and relatives. Koreans also like to check with their banks (37 percent).

Respondents say they prefer payment cards when paying for travel expenses while overseas. Cards are cited as the primary method for paying for accommodation (75 percent) and buying airfare/transport (76 percent) and travel insurance (76 percent).

Respondents are also aware that they can use their payment cards to access cash while overseas. ATMs (64 percent) are the most wellknown source of obtaining local currency, followed by money changers (42 percent) and banks (36 percent).

McGrory added: Because convenience and safety are important factors for travelers, the smartest travelers in Asia Pacific rely more on cards to make payments and access cash abroad. Not only do cards reduce the risk that is associated with carrying around too much cash, they are also a great tool to track travel expenses which can then be used as a guide to budget for the next trip abroad.

Visa cardholders can easily access a network of 1.4 million ATMs and 30 million merchants worldwide, and with more multilanguage ATMs, travelers are finding they do not have to deal with language barriers or other concerns as when they deal with money changers abroad.

About Visa:

Visa operates the world's largest retail electronic payments network providing processing services and payment product platforms. This includes consumer credit, debit, prepaid and commercial payments, which are offered under the Visa, Visa Electron, Interlink and PLUS brands. Visa enjoys unsurpassed acceptance around the world and Visa/PLUS is one of the world's largest global ATM networks, offering cash access in local currency in more than 170 countries and territories.

Asian markets slip ahead of economic data; dollar rises on Chinese central bank chief s

U.S. jobs numbers due Thursday should help investors figure out if their hopes for a recovery in the world’s largest economy are justified. They will also be looking for indications of Japanese business executives’ confidence when the Bank of Japan releases the quarterly “tankan” survey on Wednesday.

“We’re going to be a bit directionless next couple weeks,” said Andrew Orchard, Asian strategist for Royal Bank of Scotland in Hong Kong. “We could gradually drift higher, but we’re not going see an extreme move in either direction.”

“Our foreign exchange reserve policy is always quite stable. There will not be any sudden changes,” Zhou said at a conference in Basel, Switzerland, according to the Chinese newspaper National Business Daily.

Investors got a dose of positive economic news from Japan, which reported that industrial production jumped 5.9 percent from a month earlier, matching a rise in April that marked the biggest jump in 56 years. But any optimism wore off by afternoon trading, with the Nikkei 225 index dropping 93.92 points, or 1 percent, to 9,783.47.

Thursday’s U.S. employment data could give investors a better idea of where the U.S. economy is heading. Though a lagging indicator, the jobless rate should provide valuable insight into whether the economy is stabilizing or rebounding. Economists polled by Thomson Reuters predict it rose to 9.6 percent in June from May’s 9.4 percent, a 25-year high.

“We’ve got figures on employment that could give us direction, but for the most part people are just treading water, waiting for more news,” said Miles Remington, head of Asian sales trading at BNP Paribas Securities in Hong Kong.

Beyond that, U.S. earnings reports and profit outlooks could dictate markets. Some watchers are already worrying that poor earnings results, which start rolling out in early July, could weigh down a market that had been buoyed by hopeful signs of recovery

The holiday-shortened week will mean lower trading volumes. Hong Kong’s market is closed Wednesday for a public holiday, while U.S. markets will be closed Friday to observe Independence Day.

U.S. stock index futures were down, suggesting Wall Street would open lower. Dow futures were down 49 points, or 0.6 percent, to 8,324, while S&P 500 futures were down 5.7 points, or 0.6 percent, to 908.20.

Oil prices slid under $69 a barrel in Asia. Benchmark crude for August delivery slipped 60 cents to $68.56 a barrel by early afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Friday, it fell $1.07 to settle at $69.16.

californiascubadivingvacations.com Live in China is the fastest way to learn Chinese

Truth told, the average educated Chinese native only needs to know between 6,000 and 7,000 characters, a little less than the 8,000 words the average American knows of English. Plus, the strict rules of sentence structure make the language even easier to learn, since there aren’t so many exceptions to the rules.

Certainly, billions of Chinese already know this. From they were born, they have been taking Chinese language lessons. But there are ways you can learning Chinese, without having to travel or live in China.

Traditional Classes: Nowadays lots of community colleges and other educational institutions offer Chinese language lessons. In a classroom environment, you learn with other students the meanings of the characters, and get instant feedback on your pronunciation and usage. The disadvantage of traditional classes is that you keep the same pace as everyone else. So if you not master a skill,it’s easy to fall behind. PS,these classes will be very expensive once you move beyond the beginning level.

These Chinese language lessons which ranging from complete courses to ones geared toward conversational Chinese for tourists can be effective for some students. The main disadvantage is you couldn’t receive any feedback, such as specific tips and suggestions regarding your pronunciation from an instructor. These tools lack the interactivity live lessons can offer you, which, in the case of Chinese, is very important.

Stories, dialogs and humor. Available online and as podcasts, there are many resources available that offer you the chance to learning Chinesee by repeating key phrases or entire passages. These shouldn’t be bewildered with actual Chinese language lessons. These resources don’t permit you to ask questions, such as work on individual language problems or learn the grammatical rules required to master the language.

Online lessons with a native speaker: For most people, online Chinese language lessons offer the best option for mastering the language. You work at your own pace with someone who is not only fluent in Chinese, but is from China. You can distinguish the nuances of pronunciation, focus on problem areas and learn the language much more fastly. The one-on-one environment offers you the chance to practice in the privacy of your own home whenever you wish and ask questions. You get the in time feedback of an expert in the language, plus you never have to feel embarrassed during your classes, because you’re the only student attending.
